Maine's primary election is on June 11, 2024.

2024 is a big election year in Maine, with the entire state legislature on the ballot, plus the congressional and presidential races, local races, ballot questions, and more.

There are several ways to vote in Maine:

  • Vote by mail
  • Vote early in person
  • Vote in person on Election Day

REGISTERING TO VOTE

You can register to vote at your polling place when you vote, but you should register ahead of time to avoid any issues. If you register online or by mail or plan to vote using an absentee ballot, you must register 21 days in advance.

DEADLINES:

If you are voting in person, you can register to vote at your polling place on the same day you vote. For same day registration, you will still need one of the forms of identification listed below.

Presidential Primary: March 5, 2024

  • Online/Mail-in Registration Deadline: February 13
  • Mail-in Ballot Application Deadline: February 29 at 5:00pm
  • In-Person Registration Deadline: March 5, 2024

State Primary: June 11, 2024

  • Online/Mail-in Registration Deadline: May 21
  • Mail-in Ballot Application Deadline: June 6 at 5:00pm
  • In-Person Registration Deadline: June 11, 2024

General Election: November 5, 2024

  • Online/Mail-in Registration Deadline: October 15
  • Mail-in Ballot Application Deadline: October 31 at 5:00pm
  • In-Person Registration Deadline: November 5, 2024

STUDENTS: 

Students in Maine can either register at their home address or where they are currently living during school. You may only be registered and vote in one location.

WHAT TYPE OF ID DO I NEED TO REGISTER?

The registration form requires you to provide either a Maine driver’s license number, state ID card number, or the last 4 digits of your social security number.

If you are a new Maine voter and register by mail, you must also include a copy of one of the following documents to prove you are a Maine resident:

  • Government document or credential with photo ID (i.e. driver’s license, state ID, valid US Passport, military ID, ID card issued by a federally recognized Indian tribe)
  • Government ID document/credential without photo (i.e. certified birth certificate or signed social security card)
  • An official document that shows your name and address (i.e. eligibility for public benefits, utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck)
  • Student photo ID from a state-approved public or private school or institute of higher education in Maine
  • Verified unique identifier (Maine driver’s license number or last four numbers of social security number)

Once you are registered to vote in Maine, you do not need to present an ID to vote.
