PORTLAND – The ACLU of Maine will join the Portland Green Independent Party, Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine, Marijuana Policy Project of Maine and other organizers to kick off the Yes on 1 campaign, calling on Portland voters to reform the city’s marijuana laws in November.

Question 1 would legalize the private use of marijuana use by adults within city limits. Last month, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Department of Justice would allow laws legalizing the use of marijuana for adults in Colorado and Washington to go into effect.

"Our criminal justice system is maxed out, our prisons and jails are overcrowded, our budgets are strained, and we are no safer for it. It is time for Portland and all of Maine to join the growing national movement recognizing that sensible marijuana reform is the best thing not only for our wallets but also for our families and for our communities,” said Grainne Dunne, Justice Organizer at the ACLU of Maine.

"The campaign to legalize marijuana in Portland is launching on the heals of a seachange in federal enforcement of marijuana laws. Our timing is opportune and we are excited to bring our message of policy reform to the voters," said City Councilor David Marshall.
