AUGUSTA – Faith leaders, civil rights advocates, and concerned Mainers will hold a press conference in opposition to LD 1428 on Thursday, January 16th at 11:30 AM in the Welcome Center of the Maine State House.
Freedom of religion is a fundamental right that is protected by both the Bill of Rights and the Maine Constitution. LD 1428 goes beyond those protections, allowing a person to use personal religious beliefs to claim the right to break important laws that should protect us all. This could harm public safety, lead to discrimination, and dramatically increase the number of lawsuits clogging our court system. LD 1428 creates many problems and solves none.
There will be a public hearing before the Judiciary Committee on the bill at 1:00 PM that afternoon. Speakers include representatives from the faith community, immigrant community, and civil rights advocates.
