Group Offers Guidance to Government Officials
Portland – The ACLU of Maine last night sent a letter to Governor Mills, the city managers of Maine’s 15 largest cities, and the Maine Municipal Association, offering guidance for developing a response to COVID-19 that protects the civil liberties of all Mainers.
In particular, the ACLU of Maine called on elected officials to protect vulnerable populations, including people in jail or prison; to declare health centers “immigration enforcement-free zones”; to support workers who lack paid sick leave; and to use voluntary quarantine measures over compulsory ones whenever possible.
“We know this situation is unprecedented, and it will take many of us working together and utilizing our collective expertise to respond appropriately, effectively, and fairly,” wrote Alison Beyea, executive director of the ACLU of Maine. “Together, we can help ensure a response that is scientifically justified and no more intrusive upon civil liberties than absolutely necessary.”
