Augusta – The ACLU of Maine released the following statement after Gov. LePage stated he intends to wait 10 days to veto any budget passed by the bipartisan legislature that includes tax increases.
The following can be attributed to Alison Beyea, executive director of the ACLU of Maine:
“Gov. LePage has promised to hold the legislative process hostage for 10 days and force a government shutdown, even though Maine's bipartisan legislators have come to an agreement on the budget. This will likely cause delays throughout the court system, undermining access to justice and threatening the constitutional right to due process. The governor was elected by the people, to serve the people - not to punish us when his political will isn't served. We did not elect a government of one.”
